The US Dry Bean Council (USDBC) congratulates the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on the release of the Dietary Guidelines 2015 – 2020. It is well known that our food choices have a significant impact on our health and well-being. The new guidelines switch from a focus on individual nutrients to a more integrated approach that looks at the “totality,” of our diets.

USDBC submitted commentary on the need to not only emphasize the importance of dry bean (legume) consumption for a healthy diet but also to focus on the nutrient dense qualities of U.S. dry beans as both a protein and a vegetable. Rebecca Bratter, Executive Director of the U.S. Dry Bean Council emphasized, “We are pleased to see these additions to the guidelines and think the timing couldn’t be better as we kick off the International Year of the Pulse.”

Bratter encourages everyone to add more dry beans to their diet and to check the US Dry Bean Council’s website and link to the different member websites for amazing ideas and creative recipes that will allow everyone to incorporate more dry beans in their daily eating habits.
